HELP DEFEND VITAL PROTECTION AGAINST RACIAL HATE SPEECH - MEDIA RELEASE

Labor Senator Lisa Singh is urging Tasmanians to help defend Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act (RDA).

Section 18C contains vital protections against racial hate speech in Australia, but is under attack by the Turnbull Government. The latest attack is a federal Parliamentary inquiry, set up by the Turnbull Government, which is clearly intended to weaken the law.

Submissions can be lodged by email at 18Cinquiry@aph.gov.au and are due by close of business this Friday, December 9.

“I am calling on all concerned Tasmanians to lodge a submission defending Section 18C of the RDA. Submissions can be as short as a few sentences, telling the committee why you think it is important to keep Section 18C intact.

“Section 18C has been in place for more than 20 years, including during the Howard and Abbott Governments. So why is the Turnbull Government seeking to weaken it now?”

“Labor will fight against the repeal of 18C because we value the contributions made by Australia’s multicultural communities.

“What is it that the Turnbull Government wants to allow people to say, that they cannot currently say right now?”
