FOOTAGE RELEASED TODAY FROM THE 2008 AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS MISSION OF ILLEGAL WHALING IN THE ANTARCTIC - Media Release, Tuesday 28 November 2017
I am appalled by the footage released today that shows whales being brutally killed in Australia’s southern oceans.
In government, Labor took Japan to International Court of Justice over its so called ‘scientific’ whaling and our case was successful.
Indeed, the footage released today was used as evidence in that case.
The Government of Japan continues to defy the judgment of International Court of Justice 2014 on Whaling in the Antarctic, which found Japan’s whaling to be illegal.
The lack of leadership on this issue from Malcolm Turnbull and Josh Frydenberg is very disappointing, and no improvement on the desultory efforts of Tony Abbott and Greg Hunt when it was their responsibility.
The Japanese whaling fleet is currently on the water – the government must take action now to end this slaughter.
