DEVELOPMENT IN NATIONAL PARKS - MEDIA RELEASE

Labor Senator Lisa Singh has urged the Tasmanian Greens to acknowledge that sensitive development inside national parks can actually enhance the experience for visitors.

Senator Singh says a ban on development inside national parks would have prevented iconic Tasmanian tourism experiences such as Pumphouse Point, the Three Capes track, the Overland Track huts, and the Maria Island walk.

“It is obvious that some developments inside national parks actually enhance the experience for users without damaging the values of the park itself, and the Greens need to acknowledge this.”

“A blanket ban on development inside national parks would have prevented iconic Tasmanian tourism experiences like the Overland Track huts, the Maria Island walk, Pumphouse Point, and the Three Capes Track.”

“We should be giving Tasmanians the best chance possible to experience our national parks, instead of actively trying to stop them.”

“New Zealand has successfully blended tourism with nature conservation, and is a great example for Tasmania."

“Sensitive development that does not harm the values of the national park should be supported by all parties.”
