TRIBUTE TO THE POLITICAL CAREER OF LARA GIDDINGS - Media Release, Sunday 14 May 2017
Today I pay tribute to the political career of Lara Giddings, my friend and colleague, who has announced she is stepping down from state politics at the next election.
Lara is someone I have always admired and whose opinion I respect deeply.
As a young female being elected as an MP, Lara opened up pathways for young women to become active in politics. She has consistently risen over many hurdles with dignity and humanity. Becoming premier made her a role model for other women and what we can achieve in politics.
I had the honour to serve alongside Lara in Tasmania’s parliament between 2006 and 2010 and the privilege of working with her in the state cabinet.
Since transferring to Federal Parliament in 2011, Lara and I have built state and federal relations on key policy issues like medicinal cannabis, euthanasia, family violence and access to justice.
Lara has always supported the vulnerable people in our community through her career. She has been a tremendous advocate for the rights of those suffering pain to access medicinal cannabis in our community. She introduced euthanasia legislation into the Tasmanian parliament and has been a tireless advocate for access to justice, ensuring every community has equality before the law.
Lara leaves a legacy as a decent and trustworthy politician, someone who has participated constructively without demonising her opponents or resorting to fear tactics.
She always shows great empathy for those in need and always upholds Labor values. She is indeed a true believer.
I wish Lara all the best in her future endeavours.
